My head is sort of spinning over all these bright ikat fabric pieces coming out of France from a new shop called 7100 Islands. I was so excited to find out Apol Massebieau who you may know from her brand La Pomme along with her friend, Nola Andaya-Milani have collaborated (with sheer determination as they tell us communicating from France with Asian tribesmen living in a mountaintop village with no electricity) to pull together this new fab line! From container-like bowls perfect for plants or smaller ones to hold pencils to abaca sack lamps (a fun way to light up a room) - each piece is made in their workshop in France using authentic ikat made from the natural fibers of abaca, hand-woven on backstrap looms by tribespeople of the Philippines. As they mention in their shop, "The fabric is called T'nalak, made by members of the T'boli tribe. It is meticulous work. A piece 20-feet long can take as much as two months to create. As a finishing touch, the fabric is polished to a sheen with a piece of shell rubbed by hand all over the length of it."
